4 Roof Maintenance tips for the Summer Season

Roofing is an integral part of a home’s structure. It keeps the inhabitants protected from the harsh weather, shelters them, and gives structural stability to the house. And while roofing seems pretty robust, it can wear out if not maintained properly. With that said, most people only realize the importance of roof maintenance during the winter season, assuming that only the bounties of the frosty weather can damage their roof. Although snow in the winter can be hard on an estate’s roofing, it is not the only natural event that can be damaging for a roof. The heat and humidity in the summer season can be equally, if not more, damaging for the roof of your home.

If you have been neglecting your roof’s maintenance because it’s the summer season, you might be in for some roof troubles. But don’t worry, all is not lost yet. You can salvage the situation by taking some roof maintenance measures right away.

Here’s what you can do to keep your roof in a pristine state during the summer months.

Clean the Gutters

Check your gutters and see if they are clogged. If so, clean them out immediately so that when it rains, the water drains off seamlessly. Also, tighten up the nuts and bolts on your gutters to ensure they stay fixed and are able to withstand strong winds and heavy downpours.

Cut Old Trees

Trees add a lot of aesthetic appeal to a home. But when they get old, they can pose a threat to the structure of an estate. As trees get older, they lose their structural strength, which can result in limbs falling off and damaging the nearby property. Therefore, make sure you trim all the gnarly trees in your yard so that no branches fall on your roof and injure it.

Check for Shingle Damage

Inspect your roof for missing or broken shingles. If you find any of those, get them fixed immediately. Missing shingles can lead to roof leakage and inferior protection from the weather. On the other hand, cracked shingles can lead to mold infestation, especially once the rainy season hits. Hire a professional team to repair your roof if you notice any shingle damage.

Seal all Possible Nesting Spots

Keep an eye out for any inhabitable spots on your roof and seal them instantly. If birds or rodents get wind of any recesses in your roofing, they will populate them right away and wreak havoc on top of your home. Save yourself a lot of hassle by shutting down any habitable niches on your roof.

Also, don’t forget to clean any bird droppings that you see on your roof. They are quite acidic and can damage roof shingles over time.

If you don’t care for your roof in summer, the chances it will not be able to look after you once the weather changes. Minimize the chances of damage to your roof by being on top of your roof maintenance game this summer. And advise your friends and neighbors to do the same.
